How Is Cervical Spine Surgery Performed?

Cervical spine surgery is a complex operation used to difficult problems of the spine that runs through the neck region and involving the vertebrae , discs and nerves. The cervical vertebrae refers to seven and eight pairs of spinal nerves (C1 to C8 ) .

Health problems that people often experience in this field are the hernia and stenosis and both need surgery as a treatment method.

A herniated disc or herniated disc as it is more commonly known occurs when all or part of a place of disc displacement or opened due to injury or strain and force by a weakened disc. This puts pressure on the spinal nerves inside the disc that causes extreme pain, weakness and numbness.

A herniated disc usually occurs in the lumbar or lumbar spine and affects men and average more often than any other age population . Others are born with the disease .

Spinal stenosis is the narrowing of the spinal column due to age and the disks begin to decline when they become dry . The cone may also be due to inflammation of bones and ligaments caused by arthritis or inflammation . The condition of shrinkage exerts pressure on the spinal cord .

Several methods for cervical spine surgery depending on the source of the problem. If the problem , for example, is only a herniated disc , you may need a surgical incision in the front or back of the body and easily removed. But if the problem is more than one disc , the surgeon must melt the spine to be stable before removing the affected discs.

Cervical fusion can be done in three ways:

• bone taken from another part of the body or by means of a bone graft is used as between the vertebrae to promote new bone growth .

• Instead of the bone, metal implants may also be used to hold together until the vertebrae of the vertebral column is stabilized by the growth of new bone. Metal plates can be used as a reinforcement as it is screwed into the bone to fuse the vertebrae , which are nested together.

• The column is then merge all vertebrae are removed or spinal disc and fuse the adjacent vertebrae is removed .

Of the two most common problems of the cervical spine , spinal stenosis is more complex to manage and administer, and surgery is quite long and tedious . It could be a surgical incision both spinal nerves to relieve the pressure and then to a successive vertebrae if fusion removing the bone due to instability of the spine .
